Fourteen source families, one coverage picture.

The platform draws on fourteen deliberately disjoint source families, each named by the open feeds and standards it carries, never by how it is wired. All of them converge on one shared area of interest, watched across every family at once.

AIRCURRENT

Air picture — cooperative aircraft surveillance

Live airborne tracks and per-area aircraft counts derived from unencrypted aircraft position broadcasts, counted airborne-only and scoped to each area of interest.

ADS-B (1090ES / Mode-S)adsb.lol (ODbL 1.0)OpenSky Networkairplanes.liveMLAT multilaterationspace-based ADS-B

The default air feed is licence-clean and commercially permissive; non-commercial and unfiltered aggregators sit behind legal-review gates. Every contact carries its ICAO 24-bit hex and callsign, resolved to a track and screened like any other observation.

LICENCE · ODbL 1.0 · attribution

SEACURRENT

Maritime picture — vessel self-reporting

Live vessel tracks and distinct-hull counts from VHF maritime transponder broadcasts, terrestrial near-shore and satellite over open ocean.

AIS (ITU-R M.1371)NMEA 0183 AIVDM/AIVDOMMSI identityaisstream.ioSatellite AIS (S-AIS)Global Fishing Watch

Vessels are held by their MMSI identity across a sliding window, so a hull is counted once rather than per message. Terrestrial coverage runs live near the coast; satellite AIS extends the picture past the horizon under per-provider terms.

LICENCE · per-provider terms

EO·TIPCURRENT

Earth observation — free scene-tips

A zero-cost baseline that watches public optical and radar catalogues and records when fresh imagery lands over a coverage box, without asserting a detection.

Copernicus Sentinel-2 (optical)Copernicus Sentinel-1 (C-band SAR)STACEarth SearchCopernicus Data Space EcosystemLandsat 8/9

Free imagery is too coarse to count objects, so a scene-tip trips no indicator on its own — it records that fresh optical or all-weather radar exists over the box and can cue high-resolution follow-up. One catalogue contract makes heterogeneous archives searchable by space and time.

LICENCE · open · Copernicus / CC-BY

TASKCURRENT

Commercial imagery tasking — on-demand collection

On-demand high-resolution optical and radar collection ordered over a coverage box through one provider-agnostic tasking boundary and delivered back as scene assets for census.

Planet (SkySat / PlanetScope)SkyFi brokerICEYE (X-band SAR)Capella Space SARUmbra SARMaxar / Airbus

One tasking boundary brokers many constellations, so cloud penetration, night collection and sub-metre revisit are ordering choices rather than integration projects. Delivered scenes are metered per capture and run straight into the detection census.

LICENCE · commercial · per scene

GEOCURRENT

Geospatial reference — the fixed world

The static context layer — infrastructure, buildings, terrain and administrative boundaries — that every contact and detection is plotted against.

OpenStreetMap / Overpass (ODbL 1.0)OpenRailwayMapNatural EarthCopernicus DEMOverture / open building footprintsOpenInfraMap

Rail, power, ports, pipelines and aeroways give a track its fixed-world meaning: a vessel alongside a jetty or an aircraft over a restricted field reads differently from one in open space. ODbL attribution is carried onto every derived map product.

LICENCE · ODbL 1.0 · attribution

IDENTCURRENT

Identity screening — sanctions, PEP and registries

A consolidated screening set that matches tracked entities — vessels, aircraft, persons and companies — against sanctions lists, watchlists, politically-exposed-person data and company registries.

OFAC SDN & ConsolidatedEU Consolidated Financial SanctionsUN Security Council listSA FIC targeted financial sanctionsPEP datasetsCIPC company registryPOPIA

A vessel MMSI, an aircraft registration or a named person is screened against a consolidated sanctions and politically-exposed-person set and company registries, raising a contact-alert on a match. Approximate name matching absorbs spelling and transliteration drift, so a designated party spelled three ways is still one match.

LICENCE · open lists · public standards

RFROADMAP

RF signals — passive broadcast pickup

Passively received open radio broadcasts that carry identity and position — drone Remote ID, amateur and mesh position beacons, and navigation-integrity degradation reported by aircraft.

Remote ID / OpenDroneID (ASTM F3411)APRS / APRS-ISMeshtastic / LoRaGNSS-jamming (ADS-B NIC/NACp)406 MHz distress beacons

Drone Remote ID surfaces UAS identity, position and operator location for airspace awareness, while aggregated navigation-integrity loss maps likely GNSS-jamming zones. Collection stays inside the lawful-interception boundary (RICA): receive-only on open broadcasts, no decryption.

LICENCE · open standard · receive-only (RICA)

CYBERROADMAP

Cyber & infrastructure — attack-surface and threat-intel

Internet-facing infrastructure inventory and community threat-intelligence — exposed hosts, certificates, routing health and indicators of compromise — tied to entities and areas of interest.

Certificate Transparency (crt.sh)abuse.ch (URLhaus / ThreatFox)AlienVault OTXGreyNoiseBGP / RIPE RISinternet-outage telemetry

Certificate and host inventory maps an organisation's exposed footprint; routing and outage telemetry surfaces connectivity disruption over a region. Indicators of compromise attach to the same entity graph as physical contacts, so a cyber signal and a track can share a subject.

LICENCE · open / community feeds

EVENTROADMAP

Conflict & incident events — coded real-world activity

Geocoded political-violence, protest, disaster and incident events, machine-coded from global news and curated datasets, placed on the same picture as live tracks.

ACLEDGDELT 2.0UCDPGTDGDACSCAMEO event coding

Coded events give the coverage box a recent-history layer — where violence, protest or disaster has already occurred — against which live movement is read. News-derived extraction adds near-real-time regional incidents between dataset refreshes.

LICENCE · open datasets · per-source

GROUNDCURRENT

Ground telematics — cooperative tracking and transit

Trusted, authenticated position reporters — blue-force trackers, fleet and asset devices — plus public transit and rail movement feeds, forming the ground-movement layer.

GPS/GNSS trackers (Teltonika Codec 8/8E/16)Cursor-on-Target (CoT) / TAKAPP-6 / MIL-STD-2525D affiliationGTFS-Realtime transitrail movement feeds

Own units and assets report position under a per-unit token and render with standards-correct affiliation and echelon, egressed to TAK clients as Cursor-on-Target. Public transit and rail movement add scheduled ground mobility over the same box.

LICENCE · open standard · CoT / GTFS-RT

SOCIALROADMAP

Social & messaging — open discourse signal

Publicly published social-media posts, forum and messaging-channel content and media-monitoring signal, mined for narrative, mention and geolocation cues over an area or entity.

Reddit Data APIMeta Content Librarypublic messaging-channel feedssocial-listening / media-monitoringGDELT DOC

Public discourse surfaces mentions, sentiment and first-report cues that often precede formal reporting. Collection is limited to openly published content and screened against POPIA before anything is retained.

MACROROADMAP

Macro & economic context — the operating environment

Slow-moving context signals — fuel and currency prices, grid and energy state, weather and prediction-market odds — that frame why activity over a box changes.

DMRE fuel priceFrankfurter / ECB FXEIA / ECMWF energyEskom / load-reduction schedulesOpen-Meteo weatherKalshi / Polymarket

Fuel, currency and grid state explain movement that raw tracks cannot — a fuel run, a port surge, a load-reduction window. Weather and prediction-market odds add a forward-looking probability layer over the picture.

LICENCE · open data · per-source

SAFETYROADMAP

Community safety — local incident and record

Regional open-record and community-reported signal — official crime statistics, gazettes, local news and community-safety reports — tuned to the South African operating context.

Station-level crime statistics and community incident reports give a neighbourhood its baseline threat picture; gazettes and registration records add the official layer. Positioned for community-watch and private-security operators registered under PSIRA.

FIELDCURRENT

Field device events — sensed at the edge

The ingest contract for field devices reporting discrete events — presence, breach and duress — normalised onto one device-event ledger.

OGC SensorThingsLoRaWAN / Helium / SigfoxMeshtastic MQTT uplinkONVIF / RTSP camera edgepanic / gate / beam contacts

Edge devices register as identities and post events under per-device tokens, so a plate-read or a perimeter break enters the same ledger as any other observation. Covert field modalities — EO-IR, ANPR, acoustic, seismic and RF direction-finding — are detailed on the Sensors capability.

02 / ONBOARDING

Any feed, one contract.

Every source — a websocket of vessel messages, a satellite catalogue, a fleet-tracker binary, a sanctions list — is brought in behind one adapter contract that normalises it into the same observation shape. Onboarding means writing an adapter, not reworking the platform, so breadth grows a feed at a time without re-architecture.

DEDUPE

first-seen · apply

duplicate · drop

  • A single adapter contract is the only seam a source implements: bind a coverage box, pull or subscribe, and emit a normalised observation.

  • Licence terms are declared at the boundary and travel with every observation the adapter emits, so admission is licence-aware, not just schema-aware.

  • Every observation is counted exactly once: a re-sent or duplicate delivery is recognised and discarded, so the picture and its audit record never double-count.

  • Each feed is bounded by its own configured coverage box, so a source only ever watches its assigned area of interest.

  • Physical sensors normalise at the edge before admission and present the same observation shape at this seam — see Sensors.

03 / TRANSPORT & NORMALISATION

Heterogeneous wire, one observation.

Sources arrive over incompatible wire formats and are decoded into one WGS84-referenced observation, so breadth of intake never fragments what the picture reasons over.

  • The wire formats span NMEA AIVDM sentences, Beast binary, STAC Items, Cursor-on-Target, telematics codecs and protobuf tiles — six incompatible encodings behind one decode seam.

  • Ephemeral signals stay ephemeral while the durable record is written once and never mutated, so what you act on live is always backed by an immutable copy.

  • A vessel position, an aircraft contact and a tasked scene reach the picture as the same shape, so downstream reasoning never branches per source.

04 / ENRICHMENT & SCREENING

Every contact resolved and screened.

Contacts do not stay anonymous tracks: a vessel MMSI, an aircraft registration or a named person is resolved into a governed entity graph, then screened against a consolidated sanctions and politically-exposed-person set and company registries.

  • The screening set spans a consolidated sanctions and politically-exposed-person list plus company registries, including the CIPC company registry for the South African context.

  • Approximate name matching absorbs spelling and transliteration drift, so a designated party spelled three ways is still one match rather than three misses.

  • A hit raises a contact-alert on the same picture as the track that produced it; the resolved entities and their links carry downstream — see Graph.

05 / TIP AND CUE

Free tips cue paid eyes.

Free scene-tips watch the box for nothing; a tripped indicator cues paid, high-resolution collection over the footprint. Cheap coverage stays wide — expensive collection fires only where something warrants it.

LOOP ACTIVE

LOOP STAGES

TIPa count change or free scene-tip trips an indicator at the census
CUEa tasking request reaches the provider-agnostic dispatch boundary
TASKthe provider dwells through the sensor-tasking delay, then delivers
SCENEdelivered imagery is registered and counted once
CENSUSdetector output re-enters the AOI as an ordinary, sourced observation
  • Sentinel scene-tips deliberately trip no detection — they only record that fresh optical or all-weather radar exists over the footprint.

  • A cue orders high-resolution optical or SAR through one provider-agnostic tasking boundary; the provider dwells through its sensor-tasking window before the delivered scene runs into the detection census.

  • A cue is collection-agnostic: it can task an airframe — see Drones — or high-resolution SAR — see Sensors.

  • Free all-weather radar sees through cloud and night where free optical blinds, so the wide baseline never goes fully dark.

  • Returned imagery is counted exactly once, and an empty delivery is rejected.

06 / PROVENANCE & LICENCE

Source, licence and confidence on every row.

Every observation carries where it came from, the licence it crossed the boundary under, and a confidence the picture can weigh — nothing enters the picture unattributed. Custody is hash-chained and append-only, so a track, a detection or an alert traces back to the exact source and moment it was ingested. Retention and erasure run under POPIA, with attribution carried onto every derived product.

  • Source strings make every observation attributable to its originating feed and provider reference.

  • Licence gating is explicit: ODbL attribution for adsb.lol; OpenSky and aisstream held as legal-review gates.

  • Opsec by design: reference-map lookups run on infrastructure we control, so the areas you are watching are never exposed to a third party.

  • Sensitive assessment text stays inside the boundary by default and is never shared outward without intent.

  • Confidence stamped here then propagates weakest-link through downstream analysis — see Graph; subject watching against this provenance is mandate-gated — see Graph governance.

What is live, and what is next.

Eight families carry today: air, maritime, Earth-observation tips, commercial tasking, geospatial reference, identity screening, ground telematics and field device events. Six are sequenced next: RF signals pickup, cyber and infrastructure intelligence, conflict-event coding, social and messaging signal, macro-economic context and community-safety records. Each planned family already has a named feed set and a settled licence position, so the roadmap is a scheduling question, not a research one.
